Vitamins are organic food substances found only in plants and animals. With few exceptions the body can't manufacture or synthesize vitamins. They must be supplied in the food we eat or in dietary supplements. Vitamins are very essential to the normal functioning of our bodies. They are necessary for not only our growth but our vitality and general well-being.
Many people think vitamin supplements can replace the actual food that we eat. Where in fact they cannot. Vitamins can't be assimilated without ingesting food which is why we suggest taking them with a meal. All vitamins are not created equal
Vitamins are separated into two types, water soluble such as the B and C vitamins and fat soluble like A D E and K. It is generally agreed that taking a lot of water soluble vitamins can't hurt you because our bodies will flush out the extra through the urine tract. However, taking to many fat soluble vitamins can cause a problem because the body will store the excess in our fat cells.
The term vitamin originated from the word “vitamine,” a word first used in 1911 to designate a group of compounds considered vital for life. Each one was thought to have a nitrogen-containing component known as an amine. The final e of vitamine was dropped when it was discovered that not all of the vitamins contained nitrogen, and, therefore, not all of them are amines.
