Our skin is the outward appearance of who we are. But it is more than just a simple covering. It is the largest organ of our body. It is an extremely complex and dynamic system that is vitally important to our health, and in some cases reflects it as well. Proper skin care is not just hygienic but can also decrease the likelihood of disease.
Things like natural aging and prolonged exposure to the sun and tobacco smoke can cause wrinkles. Some people seem to have a natural immunity from wrinkles while others do all they can physically do and still have wrinkles.
Skin is made up of three layers, epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous fat. The upper layer, epidermis is rather transparent. It allows light to pass through. It does not contain any blood vessels as it is mostly made up of dead skin which gets its nutrients from the deeper layers of skin. The second layer or dermis contains blood vessels, nerves, hair roots and sweat glands. Below the dermis lies a layer of fat cells, called the subcutaneous fat. The thickness of this layer is different from one person to the next. It contains larger blood vessels and nerves. It is made up primarily of clumps of fat cells called adipose cells.
The subcutaneous fat lies on the bones and muscles in a loose pattern. This allows the skin to move freely. When too much fat collects the areas where the subcutaneous layers are connected become obvious which appears as cellulite on the outer part of the skin.
Wrinkles, cellulite, scars, acne, dermatitis, rashes and other skin related ailments can be diminished and sometimes repaired completely with the proper care and maintenance.
